Face-to-face athletics workshops

The School Sport Unit offers face-to-face athletics professional learning to support teachers to confidently teach athletics skills and officiate at school sport carnivals.

Workshops are delivered by School Sport Unit Athletics Project Officers Barry Pecar and John Morris and are suitable for teachers involved in both primary (PSSA) and secondary (CHS) athletics.

About the workshop

The workshop provides teachers with practical knowledge and skills to safely teach and officiate athletics events.

Participants develop their understanding of:

  • safe and correct techniques for running, jumping and throwing events
  • rules and officiating requirements for athletics events
  • relay changes
  • planning and delivering athletics sessions and programs
  • School Sport Unit safety requirements for athletics
  • roles and responsibilities when officiating at school, zone, regional and state carnivals.

Practical sessions provide opportunities to observe correct techniques, practise skills and apply officiating procedures.

Request a workshop

Zones and networks of schools can request an athletics workshop to be delivered in their local area.

A school will need to host the workshop and provide:

  • a room with a projector or screen
  • an outdoor space suitable for practical demonstrations and not in use during school break times
  • a staff member to assist participants with arrival and direct them to the professional learning venue.

Workshops can be opened to department teachers from surrounding schools and areas.

How to request a workshop

To request a workshop, email robert.cormack@det.nsw.edu.au with:

  • the proposed host school or venue
  • a school contact person
  • 3 possible dates.

The School Sport Unit will work with the host school, zone or network to confirm arrangements.
