It’s amazing what can be achieved with a little bit of initiative and innovation. Brighton-Le-Sands Public School recognised there was a need to increase the water safety awareness and skills amongst their students and set out to develop a program that worked for them – Brighton-Le-Sands style.

The program enabled a record number of students to learn invaluable water safety skills in an environment they were likely to (or already do) visit, the local swimming baths at Brighton-Le-Sands. The location meant they were able to walk from school (no buses) and there were no pool entry fees. The Department of Education, through the School Swimming and Water Safety Program, covered the cost of AUSTSWIM Teachers.

The school took advantage of those first few days of the school year (and the summer weather) when normal classroom activities had not fully commenced to ensure the program did not disrupt other activities.

Overall it made for an exciting start to the school year for both students and teachers with very successful outcomes.
