Simplifying the Classification Process for Students with Disabilities

news_mar18_classification2

From 2018 on, the NSWPSSA and NSWCHS will require students to have provisional classification to compete at zone, regional and state level competitions in Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics. Participation at national level events will still require national classification.

For over 30 years, school sport associations have been providing opportunities for students with disabilities – the range of programs and number of participants has increased. Many participants have progressed to higher honours.

Many believe classification is a complicated and difficult process. This is far from the truth but careful reading of the information and parent responsibility is needed in gaining medical information / endorsement.

The table below lists the various disability categories and links to the procedure for obtaining a classification.

Once again, the critical thing to remember is that any athlete intending to compete in the representative school sport program must have either a provisional classification or a full classification.

Note:

  • In Swimming - separate breaststroke and medley classifications may be given.
  • In Cross Country Running – for safety reasons not all classifications are eligible to compete.

If you require any further information regarding the classification process please feel free to call the School Sport Unit on 9707 6914 or local Sports Coordination Officer attached to each regional school sport association.
